The Spirit of Shinto review

When I launch a new book I’m always nervous. Will the readers enjoy reading it or not? I’m happy the The Spirit of Shinto is starting to have the first reviews, this one was shared by @my_unwritten_book_journey Thank you!

When travelling I’m always curious about the local religion and how it looks at the world. We can learn so much from other religions and cultures. When travelling to Japan I picked up some basics about Shinto but wanted to know a bit more about it. And for everyone who wants to travel to Japan and visit some Shrines this book is really a must read! It explains it simple.

The first part has a bit of history, the difference between Eastern and Western thinking and the fact that it’s not weird in Japan to have a Shintoist Birth, a Christian wedding and a Buddhist Death.

It has great quotes:
‘Shinto is essentially a religion of gratitude and love.- W.G. Aston’
And the chapters are divided perfectly so you can look up what you want to know or you can choose to read it along to understand every bit. You get to know more about Tori gates, symbols, mythology, Shrines, …
.
In short, it’s all about nature, harmony, habits, caring for your loved ones and the awe of being alive. I love that there are ten life lessons at the end of the book. Like the rest of the book it’s short and simple. A book I will reread and recommend to friends and family!
